An Honest Comparison

TimelyChurch vs ChurchTrac

Two genuinely good, budget-friendly platforms — and honestly, ChurchTrac is one of the best values in church software. This page won’t tell you who “wins.” It’ll help you tell which one fits your church.

ChurchTrac shines when…

price comes first. A remarkably broad feature set — including real fund accounting — for one of the lowest costs in the category.

TimelyChurch shines when…

you want a modern, unified experience — built-in Telegram, five languages, live Q&A, and child-safety check-in in one plan.

Credit Where It’s Due

ChurchTrac Is a Genuinely Strong Value

We’re not going to pretend otherwise. For a budget-conscious church, ChurchTrac packs a lot into a very small price — and it does something most affordable tools don’t: real church accounting.

Among the most affordable

ChurchTrac starts around ~$6–9/mo (usage-based by people count; Free, Standard, and Plus tiers) — genuinely one of the lowest-cost options in the category. (Approximate, as of July 2026 — check their site.)

Real fund accounting

A general ledger, fund accounting, financial reporting, and bank reconciliation — the kind of real books most cheap tools push off to QuickBooks. That’s a legitimate strength, and worth crediting plainly.

A lot of features, cheaply

Membership, attendance, donations, check-in, worship planning and scheduling, plus a Church Connect member web portal — a broad toolkit for the money. For many churches, that breadth-for-the-price is the whole appeal.

One honest note up front: built-in accounting is not something only TimelyChurch offers — ChurchTrac has real fund accounting too. So does TimelyChurch. If accounting is your deciding factor, both belong on your list.

The Real Differences

Four Places TimelyChurch Feels Different

Not “better at everything” — these are the specific spots where our choices diverge from ChurchTrac’s.

One Unified Experience

A Modern, Connected Interface

ChurchTrac’s interface is capable but more utilitarian, and several of its comms features live behind third-party integrations. TimelyChurch is built as one connected system — people, giving, serving, check-in, and messaging share the same modern surface, so data flows once and everything looks like it belongs together.

  • One login, one design language across every module
  • Nothing bolted on through a separate integration to configure
  • Built to feel calm on a phone as much as a laptop

No Per-Message Cost

Telegram, Built Right In

In ChurchTrac, text messaging runs through a Twilio integration with usage costs (Plus includes 250 free SMS/mo, then ~$0.03/msg — as of July 2026, verify on their site). We took a different road on purpose: TimelyChurch talks to your church over Telegram, built directly into the app.

  • Two-way: members reply, confirm serving Yes/No/Snooze, ask questions
  • Rich by default — photos, files, buttons, group channels
  • No per-message billing — send as much as you need

Honest tradeoff: members do install the free Telegram app once (about two minutes). If your church truly needs plain SMS to every phone with zero setup, that’s the one place ChurchTrac’s model may suit you better.

Why we chose Telegram over SMS
Engagement

Live Q&A, In the Box

Let your congregation ask questions — during a service, a class, or a members’ meeting — and answer them live, in public, without stitching in an outside tool. It’s a piece of the engagement puzzle that ChurchTrac doesn’t include.

  • Public question wall, shareable without an app
  • Answer in real time from the same system that runs everything else

Peace of Mind

Check-In Built Around Child Safety

Both platforms have check-in — ChurchTrac includes it from the Standard tier up. TimelyChurch puts child safety at the center of ours: secure guardian matching, kiosk mode, and a private-by-default approach to member data.

  • Kiosk check-in with guardian pickup matching
  • Member directory private by default — opt-in, not opt-out
  • Security-audited in 2026 (our own thorough engineering review — not a third-party certification)

So, Which One?

Choose the One That Fits

There’s no universal winner here — only the right fit for your church’s priorities.

Choose ChurchTrac if…

Budget comes first, and you want maximum features per dollar.

  • The lowest possible monthly cost is your top priority.
  • You want real fund accounting at a very low price point.
  • You need plain SMS to every phone with zero member setup.
  • A utilitarian, English-language interface works fine for your team.

Choose TimelyChurch if…

You want a modern, unified experience your whole church will actually enjoy using.

  • You want one connected, modern system — not features behind separate integrations.
  • Built-in, two-way Telegram messaging with no per-message cost appeals to you.
  • Your church serves in more than one language (EN, ES, RU, PT, DE).
  • Live Q&A and child-safety-first check-in matter to how you gather.

Our honest gaps (so you switch once, happily)

  • No separate app-store native app. TimelyChurch is an installable PWA (“add to home screen”) — it works like an app with no download, but it isn’t a custom store app.
  • Telegram needs a one-time install. Members install the free Telegram app once. If plain SMS to every phone with zero setup is a must, weigh that carefully.
  • No background-check integration yet (e.g., MinistrySafe), and a smaller third-party integration marketplace than the largest platforms.

Try the Fit Before You Commit

The best way to compare isn’t a chart — it’s the feel of the thing. Start free, bring in a few people, send a Telegram message, and see if TimelyChurch feels like home. No credit card to look around.
